Did I ever show the slipcover that I finished for the loveseat?  It fits very nicely.  The bottom hem is still unfinished and the inside seams still need some work.  I actually put it on the couch to chalk line it and finish it…but of course haven’t done it.

Before and afters of the old Target play kitchen.  It looks so cute now and is set up right beside my kitchen so in theory Mila can cook when I cook.  We’ll see if it that actually happens.

This is the tent we made using a hula hoop and old sheets for Mila’s birthday.  It has it’s very own chandelier!

Darling made this sweet swing for our living room.  I was so inspired by the mali-mo blog.  It is my new favorite!  It is sooooo beautiful.  I was inspired to do the tent, kitchen and swing after seeing them on her blog!

Homemade pizza with the 5 minute a day bread dough is easy and fabulous!

Apricot jam is so easy!  You don’t need to peel them.

I tested out Posie’s chocolate birthday cake and cloudburst frosting.  I was super impressed with the frosting.  I don’t generally like frosting…but this was perfect!

Free quilt tutorial link

Ohhhhh…a new crafty blog to follow for inspiration (Aneela Hoey)!  Look at this quilt!  I NEED to make this!  So Darling!

Does anyone else feel frustrated by not having enough time to make things?  I need to carve out more time for making things (other than food).  I am not sure how I do that…but I will figure it out…I just have to!

PS I really love her colors in this quilt.  I LOVE lots of white and pretty pastels with hints of red. Speaking of this color scheme, did you see Yvestown’s basement makeover?  To die for.

Lovely Bedroom Inspiration

Isn’t this so pretty and feminine?  I love how the entire room is all about the bed/linens.  I love the colors.  I love the Frech-ie feel.  I love the giant mirror.  I love the chandelier.  I agree with the comment that cote de Texas made about the paint needing to be more white and less yellow.  I love the simplicity.  I love that it isn’t cluttered.  I love that it works with just 6 items in the room and nothing else.

Obsessing about…

Shelving02

I love the idea of having shelving instead of upper cabinetry.  And I am in love with this pale blue and white color scheme.  So sweet.  I have been obsessing about yvestown blog all weekend (in between painting my armoire).

Here is the inspiration pic for my sewing armoire (also from yvestown blog).  I wanted a happy pink.  And after a lot of trial and error, I found my happy pink at Sherwin Williams (they are having a 25% off sale from Feb 10-20th).  It is called “desire pink” and I go it  in the flat, no voc paint.  Because the armoire is knotty pine (from Pottery Barn 14 yrs ago, not antique) I thought the flat paint would be better.  I like high gloss paint a lot, but not on a piece that has a lot of imperfections, dings, knots etc.

Here is her laundry room at her old house.  I have always wanted one of these plastic floor mats.  And I’ve also always wanted the painted Chinese lanterns.  But mostly I really like this pic because you can see how she incorporates some warm pine (I have a couple pieces of antique pine that I will not paint!) with a lot of white and some more modern pieces.  It really seems like it works even though it is a real mix of styles.  I like that.

I am not liking black at all right now.  I am thinking of painting my black pieces of furniture white.  I love how bright and cheery everything looks on the yvestown blog.

I love this window treatment too.  I have such a hard time thinking of window treatments.  I don’t know why but I always do.

She uses a lot of Cath Kidston in her home.  I love this Cath Kidston site.  I am contemplating an order to celebrate my 14th cancer free anniversary on Valentine’s Day(tomorrow!).

I can’t wait to show you how my armoire turned out!  I will wait to show you until I move it upstairs and organize my sewing things!  I am so excited.  I can’t believe I finally finished it…it took forever!

Don’t Forget!

Masterpiece Theater tonight at 9pm!  Downton Abbey starts tonight.

Downton abbey - PBS Twitter event

I noticed a post on my favorite homeschool blog Farm School that this is the 40th anniversary of Masterpiece.  AND she linked to a blog I have never seen before called Enchanted Serenity of Period Films.

I just LOVE when I find a new blog world.  I have such a love of period films and costumes that having a blog to look at to keep me updated on all the upcoming period films makes me so happy!  I can’t wait until I have time to see what kind of links this blog has to offer.

OH the endless rabbit holes you can fall into on the internet!  Honestly, I wish I had been able to access this kind of info when I was younger.  I felt so different when I was a teenager because there didn’t seem too be many kids my age into the whole period film/costume/acting/crochet/vintage clothes/baking/thrifting/Marie Antoinette/natural beauty products/cooking/sewing/book loving/crafting/decorating thing.  Now I realize there is an entire world of kindred spirits out there in blog land.

Of course, I am also extremely lucky to have found my real life kindred spirits that are my friends.  Thanks ladies!

I have always wanted to make one of these…

pretty enamel brooch bouquet. Tumblr_krtf9gddbB1qzm5bwo1_500_large

**pic is from Bluebird blog**

I want to make one that emulates my wedding bouquet.  Mine was made of a lot of white freesia, white tiny roses (maybe some other white flower?), and the palest blush pink tiny roses and I think it had some ivy in there because it had a significance in Victorian times (but now of course I can’t remember what it symbolized).  How fab would this vintage pin bouquet be with a lot of clear/white sparkle brooches and a tiny bit of pink?  Maybe I can make one in time for next year (our 16th anniversary).

Housekeeping note…

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

So my darling brother (aka Uncle Fish) has begun helping me fix up my blog.  He is responsible for turning it pink and creating the little house  that appears up there in the tab section next to darling dovecote.  I think it is called a “favicon” or something.  It is supposed to a remembrance of my darling dovecote.   It is so cute, right?  Anyhoo, Fish is going to be helping me achieve some of my blog-ie potential.  Isn’t he so kind to help me?  Over the next couple of months I hope to be making some updates/changes to the blog.  It is going to be so fun!  And I actually wrote an ABOUT page!  It only took me close to a year to do it!  Thanks, Fish!

Here is Mila doing a bit of housekeeping.  Because I know no one wants  to read a post with no pics!  They should tell you this on the first day you start your blog.

PS  This is post #339.  Darling Dovecote’s 1 year anniversary will be on December 13th.  Wow!

**pic and pattern from The Yvestown Blog**

Why do I have such a hard time following patterns?  I have been trying to get these hearts to look just right for like an hour…I am so tired.  I just can’t seem to get them right.  Maybe tomorrow?  I hope!

Warning, you might want to cover your eyes…

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

So I am going to show you something a bit scary.

This was my bedroom earlier today.  I would have taken more pics of this craziness but my camera was out of memory.  Let me just sum up…it looked like this or worse in every direction.  We don’t have a laundry room in this house.  Our washer/dryer is in the the upstairs hall.  This is more convenient than having it in the basement I think.  But it means my bedroom has become the laundry room.  I am really tired of that.  And I have been inspired by this blog called Nesting Place.  She is doing a series called 31 days to a less messy nest.  VERY inspiring.  So I have decided to challenge myself to get the laundry situation under control.  I need to invent some sort of organizational system.

Did I also mention that our bedroom also serves as my sewing area?  It gets very messy in here!

We haven’t really done anything to our bedroom since we bought this house.  I am feeling like maybe it is time to make some plans for this room.
