Mt Airy flea market

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

Here are today’s treasures.   A platter marked Czechoslovakia.  And a long bowl that I am going to put on my dresser to hold my pretty hair things (I think).  Total spent?  $13.  I have a weakness for pretty china!

Platter:  It almost has a hand painted quality.  The flowers look more like water colors than transfers.  But I don’t think it is painted.  It is just so delicate and lovely.

Serving bowl:  So Marie Antoinette!  It has a pink and gold, scalloped edge and little, scattered rosebuds. I wonder what this is meant to serve?  Asparagus might fit nicely in it?

Sorry my pictures look so bad.  I did the close-up setting on my camera with no flash and it still looks blurry!  A new camera is in our future.  Maybe Christmas?

PS  This flea is mostly garage sale stuff (not so good new things).  There were only a couple people with vintage items.  I always come home with a little something though.  Last year I got an antique, drying rack for $10…so you just never know!

Purple mop…

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

The pink vacuum was a present from Auntie H for Mila’s last bday.  The purple mop Mila found in a pile of free stuff at a garage sale.  Darling was so funny.  He was like “are we going to get that?  why?”  LOL!

New Treasure from last weekend’s garage sales

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

I know it is a little bit weird.  That is why we liked it (Darling came with garage sale-ing last Sat, so fun!).  It is an aluminum table base for $10.  We have been looking for a large outside table for the back yard.  I think it is 60′s?  It is kind of Seussical and definitely over the top…not sure if we will keep it this color or what.  Darling thought it would be fun to remove the paint and just keep it aluminum.  But my other outside furniture purchase from this year is white painted aluminum as well.  It needs either a glass or plexiglass top cut for it.  I am thinking we can have a hole cut in the center for an umbrella…so I am leaning towards plexiglass so I don’t have to worry about the kids knocking it over or a gust of wind picking the umbrella up and knocking the table over etc.  I need to look for more chairs to go with it…hmmmm…

This weekend’s treasures

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Mila already has this Gap coat in a 2T.  I bought it used from ebay (they go for close to $20!)  I LOVE this coat.  I love the colors.  I LOVE a Fair Isle pattern!  And it was $5 at the thrift shop in Mt Airy for this 4T so I got it. The pretty blue (they are like white milk glass, but instead a lovely Marie Antoinette blue) cups were from the thrift store as well.  They were marked $6 each (too much!!!!!), somehow I ended up getting them for $5 total (YAY!).  The white Swiss dot blouse is from Lucy”s for $4.  The bowl is form Chartreuse.  The guy in the barn still has decent prices.  The bowl was $2.  It has a pretty dot/ball pattern all the way around the edge.

This is also from the nice barn guy at Chartreuse.  It was $1.  I know this looks like a regular teacup, but it is very thick and small.  I am wondering if it was meant as a child’s cup?  Is there such a thing?  I have one other like this, similar size and thickness (different pattern).  They never come with a saucer.  I use the other one for Mila at the table for milk or juice.  So it will be nice to have 2 now.

PS  I have one more item from this weekend.  SOOOOOO interesting!  It is an aluminum table base for $10.  I will take a pic when I get it out of the car!

This weekend’s garage sales

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

I went down to the Rummage Sale at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church on Rt 28 in North Potomac.  They advertised this one as a yard sale so it was difficult to figure out what time it started.  (7am).  I got there at 8am…it was really bad.  There were a few cute clothes for Mila but they were over priced.  Everything else was horrible!  I didn’t buy a single thing there.  St Marks Orthodox Church rummage was also today on River Road in Bethesda (7124 River Rd).  It started at 8 am.  Next year I will try this one instead.

I  hit a few garage sales on the way home.  The items above came from a New Market community sale.  The purple dress is for now.  The 2 sweaters (the pink one is cashmere…schmancy!) and the Hannah Anderson dress (very pretty floral) are for the fall.  The pretty old brooch was only $2.  I kind of like the brooch on that dress.  Would it be weird to put it on Mila?  Hmmm….Total spent today?  $6.50

I have to say that I have not had very good luck yet this season with sales.  It has kind of been a bummer.  Maybe I don’t have my usual enthusiasm because of the Lyme?  I started meds one week ago and feel A LOT better.  Still very tired though.

Garage sale last Friday

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Total spent? $4  I am going to try and spray paint those gaudy candle holders white and see what I think.  They cost me 50 cents for the pair so I won’t be too upset if it doesn’t work out.  The vintage purses are for Mila’s dress up box.  The vintage child’s dress is cute and will hopefully clean up well.

On Sat I went to the Good as New Sale at the Damascus Church.  It was horrible.  Really, truly awful.  I mean worse than Goodwill.  It started on Friday so maybe it was better the first day?  I had been to this one once before and it was bad then too.  For sure there is no point in going to rummage sales the second day.  In fact if you are not there when they open, there is no point in going at all.

The Urbana Fire House flea market was Sat as well.  It was really bad.  I hit a few garage sales as well Sat.  NOTHING came home with me.  Wow.  Oh well, some weeks are like that!

This Friday there is a rummage sale near Purcellville, VA.  Maybe that one will be interesting?

This weekend’s treasures…

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

Yes, it is that time of year again…

Saturday was St Mark Presbyterian Church 10701 Old Goergetown Rd.  It was bad.  I had been to this one once before (years ago) and it was bad then as well.  I came away with a 50 cent broken pitcher.  It is a fairly small area and the stuff was crappy.  Directly from St Mark’s Nora and I drove over to St. Elizabeth’s yard sale/rummage at 917 Montrose Rd.  Mostly individuals were set up selling yard sale type items.  The sale raised money for Haiti.  Nora bought a cute wool rug but there wasn’t much of interest…EXCEPT…these…

I saw this patio set from across the parking lot.  They were just unloading it as one of the donated items.  An older couple had already spotted it and were waiting for prices when we walked up.  When she said $5 for the ottomans, $10 for the chairs, and $20 for the love seat, I got pretty excited.  I walked away with all the pieces.  3 chairs, 2 ottomans, and the love seat.  $60 total!   It was a bargain!  The set is made of aluminum.  Which means it is lightweight and I can move it around by myself.  AND it will never rust!  I don’t even need to repaint it.  It just needs a bit of cleaning.  The pics here are of the front porch.  I put two of the chairs and an ottoman in the back yard.  I found these pink cushions elsewhere at the sale.  They are not from this set but they fit perfectly!  I thought I should get them because it will make finding/making new cushions that much easier if I know what exactly I am looking for.  It will be a bit of a challenge figure out the cushions…any ideas?  What era is this set?  1950′s or 60′s is my guess.  I looked up “vintage aluminum patio set” on ebay and the prices for these (although there wasn’t anything quite like these) were outrageous.  Like buy it now for $1,800!  Even for the ugly ones!

I am really happy about this purchase because more seating for the outside was like number two on the furniture want list.  Number one remains a dining table, chairs and sideboard.  Number two is now two twin beds for the boys and a low dresser for their closet.

These came from a garage sale on Friday.  More of my plates for 25 cents each!  YAY!  I needed those.  The fisher Price doggie was 50 cents and the crocheted potholder was free.  I also hit 2 estate sales today (Sunday) which I never do (on Sunday).  They were awful.  Over priced and full of crapity-crap.  Good thing I made out yesterday with the patio set!

Rummage Sales etc

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Last week was St Peters Episcopal rummage sale in Poolesville.  Starts on a Thurs night which was kind of nice (April 7, 8 and 9).  Mila and I were waiting in line to get in at 5pm.  People actually ran when the tape was lifted.  It was a bit weird.  It was a fairly quick drive through the country back roads.  Everything is so beautiful right now with the trees in bloom.  Maryland farmland is just so lovely.  This was a decent sale.  A couple small tents of furniture outside.  Some small vintage finds.  Prices were fair/good. The Pyrex, flour sifter, vintage hat and one other glass item that I forgot to take a pic of because I already put it on the mantel (I will get a pic when I finish redoing the mantel for Spring) came from here.

Also last week was the rummage at St James Episcopal Church on Seven Locks in Potomac (starts Friday morning April 8).  I had actually been to this one before and had the same luck.  Not so good.  You would think because of the area that it would be good…not so much.  We arrived about 15 mins late because we had to sit in traffic (the roads were wet) but I honestly didn’t think we missed much.  I bought the clothes pins (which may not even be old) for $2 and the size 5 Jessica McClintock will be nice for Mila’s dress up box ($6 is pricey, it was not in pristine condition, it is having an oxi-clean bath now).  I might skip this one in the future.

Also noticed that St John’s Church 9120 Frederick Rd in Ellicott City was this same weekend (April 8 and 9).  Maybe I will try this one next year?

A few upcoming sales:

April 16 Gaithersburg indoor Flea Market (9-1)

April 23 Mt Airy Lions Club Flea Market

May 7 Urbana Flea Market (the neighborhood sale is usually this weekend as well)

May 14 Outdoor Baby Bazaar in Gaithersburg

May 17 (7-11am) “longest yard sale” at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick.   This was last year’s date, not sure what the exact date is for this year?

June 11 Gaithersburg Outdoor Flea Market

Today’s garage sales and baby bazaar

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

Darling got an antique fertilizer/spreader.  We needed this and this one is in nice vintage shape.  Metal seems so much nicer than the new plastic ones anyhow.  $5

I got an antique laundry basket.  It belonged to the seller’s mother, named Elenore.  She died last December at the age of 94.  Her laundry basket has gone to a good home.   I won’t forget her story.  I think this is what I love about vintage things.  I love a good story.  And it makes the pieces instantly mean something to me.  Every time I pick up this basket I will think of Elenore, 60 years ago,  going outside to hang her laundry.  $5

Pretty robin’s egg blue bowl $1.  Needs a bit of cleaning up.

Pretty corduroy pants for Mila with heart pockets.  Pretty print long sleeve onsie (nwt) .  $2 each  The Gaithersburg baby bazaar seemed much better in the spring.  We needed some metal gates but didn’t find any today.

Total spent $15

Today’s rummaging…

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

E and I went to a couple rummage/yard sales.  FUN!  Total spent?  $11.

LOVE the Fisher Price record player from 1971.  It has all the records too.  $5!!!!!

**I think I am going to have Darling spray paint this picnic basket either pink or aqua (I already have this same basket in a larger size that I use as a picnic basket).   I am going to use it for storing car toys for Mila.**
