The Great Gatsby and a few other things…

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

Is everyone as excited as me to see Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby?  It comes out May 10.  I am all about period movies based on classic literature.  I think it is my favorite movie genre ever.  I’m in love with the clothing from this time period.  Have you seen the Prada sketches of costumes for the movie floating about on Pinterest?  Every time I watch this Gatsby trailer I want to chop my hair off and lose 20 pounds.  LOL  I am of course on the lookout for some Gatsby inspired clothing.

I have been extremely lucky in finding some new clothes this Spring that I just adore.   They are not 1920′s but they feel vintage and maybe even a little Gatsby to me.  They sort of make me want a Mint Julep.

029

I am just crazy for subtle, feminine detailing in clothing.  I also really enjoy clothes that look period or even a little costumey.  I get that it’s not everyone’s thing.  In some parallel universe, I think I just might be a costume designer for the movies:)  This is a 100% cotton eyelet, peplum top with a scalloped sleeve from Ann Taylor Loft.  I have to admit that I had just about given up hope on Loft.  Their fall/winter stuff was all synthetic materials and no vintage feeling clothes at all.  I am so happy I “happened to check them out” again.  They are just about the only convenient clothing store (other than Target) to me so I will most likely forever continue to walk through Loft even though I have a love/hate relationship with it.

Here is another one from Loft, 100% cotton, dotted Swiss t with an eyelet panel down the front and 3 little buttons on the back.

031

This mint, 100% cotton, peter pan collar shift has row, vertical pleats (That isn’t the right word.  Granzie, help me out…what is that called?  It escapes me right now.) and khaki highlighted, open work/hemstitching (not sure exactly what that’s called either) down the front.

032

This one is from Boden.  It’s 100% cotton, dotted Swiss with a peter pan collar and scalloped button placket.  I will most likely wear all of these with jeans.

033

The shoes are from dsw.com.  It’s a brand new to me called Chelsea Crew that does some very vintagey looking shoes.  Yay!  I saw these shoes and had to have them even though I don’t wear heels.  These are very comfortable and great for someone like me who loves the look of heels but doesn’t have the sort of life for heels (they are very low+wide=practical).  I’m wearing these to the grocery.  With jeans.   I don’t care.  I’m not waiting to dress up to use them (because I really never go anywhere that I need to dress up).  I have always wanted t-strap shoes, they are just so old fashioned.  These are synthetic (not leather) and therefor, pretty reasonably priced.   The hat was $10 from Target.  Oh no!  Hats on beds is bad!  Thanks Drugstore Cowboy for giving me a hats on beds phobia (Carey, this movie always makes me think of you <3 ).

PS  The flower duvet on the bed is a recent consignment find that I’m absolutely crazy for.  I got a whole set of Liberty of London for Target bedding from the Consignment shop next to the Farm Woman’s market in Bethesda a few months ago.  It was a great price AND my mom was so kind to spoil me and buy it for me :)

I’ve been messing around with some Masterpiece Theater inspired hairdos in an attempt to feel inspired about keeping my hair long when I see Gatsby.  I’m so not kidding.  When I walked out of Luhrman’s Moulin Rouge movie I knew I needed a belly button ring.  I didn’t even like the movie, but it was so visually inspiring.   PS  This hairstyle was super easy.

Um….I’ve never posted a pic of myself in the 3.5 years I’ve had my blog.  Awkward.  I wanted to post this for 2 reasons.  #1 My Grams face-timed me by accident last weekend and I was sick and looked awful.  I promise I don’t always look soooo horrible, Grams :)  (plus, I was taking a pic of my hair anyway).  #2  This is the other shirt I bought this Spring from Boden.  It is synthetic, but it has a peter pan collar and horizontal, row pleating/what-sits?    And the color is just darling.

OK, so the name of this post should actually be:  Holy Cow!  I bought five shirts!  Such a splurge but I’m happy I did it.  Sometimes it just feels good when it’s my turn to be spoiled.

**Pin tucking!  Thanks, Nora :)  Those are the pleated what-sits I was thinking of…**

Here is what we have been up to…

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Auntie R gave Darling this scooter.  I love it.  It is so cute!  I need to learn how to drive it.

I got these cute play hair rollers at Unique for Mila.  So cute!

I made two giant batches of strawberry applesauce.  The first was 10 lbs of apples and was so good we ate it in 3 days!  The second batch was 15lbs of apples (I had more red delicious than grannies for the second batch) and 2 lbs strawberries, plus a squeeze of lemon and some honey.  The second batch is not as good.  I think too many red delicious made it too watery and so I tried to cook it down a bit.  It turned into an almost apple butter.  Good, but nothing like the first batch.  Oh I made chicken broth with chicken feet.  It completely changed the texture of the broth.  Very gelatinous!

Mila got her summer sandals.  These were too big, I exchanged them for a size smaller.  I love these salt water sandals so much I ordered myself the red adult version :)

These little potted flowers were 3 for $10 at Giant.  They were such a treat!   I bought the pretty lacey Ikea pots for $2.50 each I think.  I bought them with Giant potted flowers in mind.  They are a perfect fit!

I made some pretty cards.

I bought these lovely lamps with Sacha at Unique for $6.99 each.  I am crazy about them.  They need quite a bit of cleaning/fixing, but they are so very pretty…I can’t wait to get them working!

The last month was a bit hard.  Mila and Liam both went through nasty stomach viruses and I have been dealing with awful rashes all over by face and neck.  I believe I finally figured it out…I have developed a coconut allergy (I haven’t been able to wash my hair in a week).  More on that later…I have been so busy…and then today we lost Moonie.  But Sacha is here and that is fun…and G and I are walking and that is fun.  I have been spending too much time looking on ebay for pink and blue porcelain handled items to take my mind off things.  I got a few new pieces to add to my little collection (Mila already broke my vintage cake separator/cutter…I was so disappointed).  But it is finally March and Spring is nearly here.  All will be well…February always seems like a hard month.

3 day juice cleanse for my 15th survival anniversary

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

To celebrate my 15th cancer free anniversary on Valentine’s Day Darling and I are doing a three day juice cleanse.  I have been wanting to do a detox since I went off my meds for Lyme/Bartonella.  I am pretty excited because the last time Darling and Sacha had to do a 5 day by themselves since at the time I was on medication and I puked after the first juice (when your meds say take with food, they mean it!).  I am using The Three Day Cleanse book (from the people who do The Blueprint Cleanse).  We are doing a level one cleanse and will be doing 6 juices a day.

Day 1

1.  greens with apple

2.  grapefruit-strawberry

3.  cherry-banana-peach

4.  pineapple-raspberry

5.  spinach-blueberry-apple-lemon

6.  raw chocolate milk

Day 2

coconut oil

raw cashews 3 cups

We purchased as much as we could from Costco to keep the price down.  We had to get a few things from the Co-op and I still need to make a run to Giant for a couple things.  We start on Monday!

Yesterday Darling, Mila and I went shopping for new sneakers and workout pants (Off Broadway for the shoes and TJ Maxx for the pants).  I am registering for Zumba with G and Darling and I are getting the couch to 5k app that Sacha introduced us to.   Also I have my first appointment with a natural MD tomorrow (Dr Rothschild in Mt Airy).  I hope it goes well!  It feels good to make time for these healthy things even though we have a two year old + nine yr old + thirteen yr old.  It is so hard to find any time for things these days.

Fun stuff and not so fun stuff…

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Last week was a tough week.  Lyme Disease.  Hmmmmmm….let’s not talk about that today…

Last Sat G and I went to St Thomas Moore Academy rummage sale in Buckeystown.  It was decent.  Here is what I got:

Bird Bath 75 cents.  Blue Depression Glass $3.  An Italian skirt/top outfit for Mla for $1.

I did very well for Mila this weekend at a garage sale in the neighborhood.

Cute pants for the fall with squirrels on the bottom.

I realize this coat is a bit over the top (pink and flower buttons and pink fake fur).  But if I were a little girl, I would want to wear it everyday!  It is a Rothschild coat and I only paid $10!

I bought these boots for $6.  They look new.  They will be so fun!

Here is all the loot!

I couldn’t resist this pic!  Mila LOVES shoes.  It is so weird!

Granzie, here are my shoes the cats peed on!

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Theses are my lovely shoes that I almost threw out because the cats peed on them…but I stuck them in a bag until I didn’t get sick looking at them.    I wiped them down with a mixture of half vinegar and half water with some baking soda for good measure (Thanks, Granzie, for the tips).

This ugly watermark (pee) came out!  They look fabulous again, but still do not smell fabulous!   I don’t wear these shoes anymore, they hurt terribly!  I just like to look at them (is that weird?)…so I guess I will just spray them with perfume or something?

A bit of shopping for Valentine’s Day (Target treats) for my 14th cancer free anniversary!

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

I was in desperate need of new sneakers.  And these dish towels went on clearance for $1.99.  A little color therapy!

Here is my new favorite cotton shirt.  It is half  hippie, half Victorian.  At least in my world it is.

I love the details.

A few new things for Mila

Monday, February 7th, 2011

I ebayed these.  So cute.  From Mini Boden.  About 1/3 of the original price.

Theses are new for Mila for our FL trip.  So fun!  We are all really looking forward to our FL trip the last week of Feb.

I might have to add a new catagory on the blog…Mini Boden

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011
OMG, look what I just splurged on for Mila for next fall!  A mini velvet coat!  It is normally $70, I just got it for $31 from Mini Boden (of course)!
I debated on the color.  I almost got the plum.  But then I decided that the gray will go with whatever shoes/boots I have for her next fall.  And I always have a lot of pink for her (because I love pink) and gray will tone it down a bit.  And I like purple, but the computer never shows the actual shade of anything and I didn’t want a surprise purple (I might not like it).  Plus gray is a little unexpected for a baby and I like that.  She has a pair of gray overalls with white polka dots that are so pretty on her!
Almost all of Mila’s clothes are thrifted/ebayed.  So I feel ok splurging on Mini-Boden sales once in a while.  OR splurging on Livie and Luca shoes (they just had their 2x yearly 50% off sale).  Here is what I got for her for spring:

Blossom Red

Blossom Red

I guess these were part of their fall line?  They look spring-y to me!  They are very cute!

Garnet Hill Appliquéd Boiled Wool Slippers

These would be so nice for Christmas.

Haflinger Boiled Wool Flower Slippers, Sizes 6-4

And matching ones for Mila!

A bit pricey.  Maybe they will go on sale?
